Imaging USA (http://www.ImagingUSA.org)]], one of the longest running conventions and tradeshows for professional photographers, will also be offering free public access to its International Print Exhibit in Nashville, Tenn., at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. On display January 10-12, 2010, this exhibition—one of the world’s largest annual photographic print exhibits—will provide inspiration, not just for professional photographers, but for anyone who appreciates the artistry of photography.

“Many people gather ideas from what they see around them. That’s one reason the International Print Exhibit is perfect for the artistic at heart. For professional photographers, it’s one of the best places to get inspired to try a new pose or filter and be reminded why they first loved this medium,” says Jim Dingwell, coordinator of Professional Photographers of America ‘s (PPA) Photographic Exhibitions Committee.

The images that will be displayed come from around the world and are largely from PPA’s prestigious annual International Photographic Competition, including all of the images from the 2009 PPA Loan and General Collections. Loan Collection images will travel to different photographic conventions around the world, but the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center is only place where all collections can be viewed in one place.

“For people in the Nashville area, this is not only a unique opportunity to see amazing art, but also to get a glimpse into our cultures and trends through the eyes of professional photographers, as well as an inside view into the elements that make these images the best in the world,” says Helen Yancy, chairperson of PPA’s Photographic Exhibitions Committee. “For all we know, the next Ansel Adams or Anne Geddes is represented here.”

The print exhibit is free and open to the public at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, Ryman Exhibit Hall B6, Level 0. A convention featuring educational classes for photographers and more than 600 tradeshow booths with an expansive array of photography products is also available for additional fees. What this tutorial IS:
An easy-to-follow (I hope) walkthrough guide to creating an aged photograph from scratch.

The following steps detail how I created the above image. I have deliberately avoided any particular software package (eg Photoshop or GIMP) because I want anyone to be able to do this kind of processing.

What this tutorial IS NOT:
It’s not a crash course in how to use photo editing software. I’ll assume you have good working knowledge of how the basic tools work.

For what it’s worth I’m using GIMP to create the images for this tutorial, but you can use any software you like as long as it supports layers and transparency manipulation. I have not installed any special filters for this processing.

froknowsphoto.com When it comes to selecting a lens for a specific photo shoot there are so many factors that come into play. Do you want to shoot wide angle and have everything in sharp focus or do you want to shoot super tight and blow the background way out. In the video below you see Greg demonstrating how by just changing the distance to the camera the background will totally change. The first section of the video is being shot with the Nikon D3s 70-200 2.8 VRI at 200mm. You can see that the background is blown out but you can still make out the shapes in the background. In the second part of the video Greg got closer to the lens and all that changed was the focus. Now you can see that being closer to the lens the background has been totally blown out and anything in the back is unrecognizable. You don’t always need to have the best glass or fastest F stop to blow out the background. If you get closer to your subject and have a deeper background you can still get a similar effect with a 5.6 lens. Sure it is harder to blow out shorter backgrounds but it is possible with just about any lens. Now lets look at what happens when you use wide angle lenses vs telephoto. When you use a telephoto lens you are compressing anything in the image, when you use wide angle you are doing the opposite of compressing. For example when I shoot head shots I love using my Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII because I can isolate my subject form the background. I zoom in as well as get closer to my …
