The Great Scale Model Train Show at the Maryland State Fairgrounds on the April 14-15, 2012 weekend, is an all-American event and big finish to the spring break season. The show celebrates the hobby of model railroading that continues to captivate generations of train buffs, serious hobbyist and collectors, and kids of all ages. Show visitors will have the opportunity to talk to experts from model train clubs — even a Circus Modelers Group. Many historical organizations will exhibit, including the B&O, C&O, Conrail, and Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Historical Societies.

Perhaps no one passionately embraces railroading in his daily life more than the shows co-producer, master modeler Howard Zane. A nationally renowned authority on scale model railroading, Zanes personal HO-scale layout occupies almost 3,000 square feet of the lower level of his home in Columbia, Maryland. Among the largest and most complex private layouts in the U.S., it has been a continual work in progress and labor of love for Zane since he began building it in 1983.

Zane and his layout have been featured regularly in model train magazines and press, including Model Railroader, Railroad Model Craftsman, in multiple segments of Allen Keller Productions’ “Great Model Railroads” video series, and in the PBS series “Tracks Ahead.”

Zane is the author of My Life With Model Trains,” a hardcover 300-page book with 450 full-color photographs that chronicles his adventures in the “World’s Greatest Hobby” and his journey creating his layout.

Lately I have bought some new ones for use in situations like the one below. It was a really beautiful day here today in Dunedin. Autumn has arrived but it was still warm and sunny enough to remind me of our recent summer.

I typically use a Circular Polarizer and/or a UV Haze filter when outdoors because of New Zealands very strong sunlight. The only downside is that they can sometimes make a scene look cold when the desired effect is a nice warm glow.

This evening I started out using an 81A warming filter but the effect wasn’t strong enough. The light was quickley disappearing and I wanted to accentuate the dominate colour of the sunset. I then tried a Cokin graduated tobacco T1. Perfect.

Someone asked me today why use filters at all. Why not just use computer software? A fair question in this technological age.

Its all about the light. Basically a good filter, used appropriately, allows you to capture the light you want at the time of the exposure. That reason alone means filters are an essential part of the photographers equipment. Oh, and they also save time later on in front of the computer. Post processing dozens of pictures can become a chore otherwise!

Although we may use a digital camera it is still important to know how to take a well exposed photograph just like in the days of film. Filters can aid that process by balancing the amount of light we need. Remember the camera has a limited dynamic range of about 5 stops so photography is still about artistry not technology.

The National Portrait Gallerys Beatles exhibit will feature over 40 of the most significant photographs capturing the essence of the Beatles and their role in music history. The esteemed photographers include Harry Goodwin, Dezo Hoffmann, Linda McCartney, Terry ONeill, Robert Whitaker, David Bailey, Philip Townsend, and other notables.

Harry Goodwin (the still photographer at Top Of The Pops for nine years from 1964 to1973) captured historic images of Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, John Lennon, and George Harrison. In addition to photographs of the Beatles as a group, Harry photographed the four musicians during their subsequent careers when they later formed other bands and performed as solo artists.

Harry Goodwins involvement in this exhibition will mark the second time his Beatle photographs have been displayed at the National Portrait Gallery. In February 2003, in celebration of John Lennon being voted #10 (by national vote) from one hundred Britons, Goodwins portrait of Lennon was selected for inclusion in the NPG/BBC publication Great Britons: The great debate. The competition was partnered by BBC Television who made television programmes of the ten most popular subjects cut down from an initial list of 100.

Goodwins works were previously displayed at the National Portrait Gallerys most popular show to date, Icons of Pop in 1999. Harry Goodwins photographs of Sandie Shaw and Tom Jones were part of that 1999 exhibition which attracted over 220,000 visitors.

The Beatles on the Balcony exhibition coincides with a partner exhibition featuring the works of Angus McBean (1904-1990). All six artists bring a sensibility of seeing the richness of the moment in the artifacts of our social past and, in so doing, a realization of what is beautiful on many levels. For this reason they invite everyone to attend the opening of their show Forgotten: The Art of Decay on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006 from 6-11pm.

The urban world is filled with so many structures, some forgotten and others well-loved. Why are some saved and others left to die? What stories do these buildings have to tell, what scenes have these stones witnessed? Why are people so obsessed with erecting their monuments in metal and brick — and why do they so carelessly abandon them when they are done?

Russell Brohier, Sean Galbraith, Steve Jacobs, Lopix, Mathew Merrett and Jay Morrison formed the DKPG in 2005 as they began to take notice of each other and their work. Together, they prowl the areas where most will not go. They do this to bring back the images that they feel they must share with the world. The DKPG wants others to be able to see what they have seen, what others do not want to be seen. The rot, the neglect and the careless abandonment that most would just bulldoze into the earth, forever burying their stories.

froknowsphoto.com When it comes to selecting a lens for a specific photo shoot there are so many factors that come into play. Do you want to shoot wide angle and have everything in sharp focus or do you want to shoot super tight and blow the background way out. In the video below you see Greg demonstrating how by just changing the distance to the camera the background will totally change. The first section of the video is being shot with the Nikon D3s 70-200 2.8 VRI at 200mm. You can see that the background is blown out but you can still make out the shapes in the background. In the second part of the video Greg got closer to the lens and all that changed was the focus. Now you can see that being closer to the lens the background has been totally blown out and anything in the back is unrecognizable. You don’t always need to have the best glass or fastest F stop to blow out the background. If you get closer to your subject and have a deeper background you can still get a similar effect with a 5.6 lens. Sure it is harder to blow out shorter backgrounds but it is possible with just about any lens. Now lets look at what happens when you use wide angle lenses vs telephoto. When you use a telephoto lens you are compressing anything in the image, when you use wide angle you are doing the opposite of compressing. For example when I shoot head shots I love using my Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII because I can isolate my subject form the background. I zoom in as well as get closer to my …
