The Great Scale Model Train Show at the Maryland State Fairgrounds on the April 14-15, 2012 weekend, is an all-American event and big finish to the spring break season. Show visitors will have the opportunity to talk to experts from model train clubs — even a Circus Modelers Group. Perhaps no one passionately embraces railroading in his daily life more than the shows co-producer, master modeler Howard Zane. A nationally renowned authority on scale model railroading, Zanes personal HO-scale layout occupies almost 3,000 square feet of the lower level of his home in Columbia, Maryland. Among the largest and most complex private layouts in the U.S., it has been a continual work in progress and labor of love for Zane since he began building it in 1983.

Zane and his layout have been featured regularly in model train magazines and press, including Model Railroader, Railroad Model Craftsman, in multiple segments of Allen Keller Productions’ “Great Model Railroads” video series, and in the PBS series “Tracks Ahead.”

Zane is the author of My Life With Model Trains,” a hardcover 300-page book with 450 full-color photographs that chronicles his adventures in the “World’s Greatest Hobby” and his journey creating his layout.

Organizers are anticipating hundreds of attendees over a two-day period when the Austin Texas Antique Postcard & Paper Americana Show and Sale occurs Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11. This is the 2012 Edition of the Austin Texas Show and Sale, produced by Jim Taylor and CourthouseSquare.net.

Antique postcard and paper buyers and sellers enjoy two days of shopping, selling and trading. Thousands of pre-1940, original historic photos and postcards of towns and historical events are sorted alphabetically by town and priced individually, or in lots. Additionally rare, vintage Halloween, Santa, patriotic and more postcards and paper items are available at this event.

“This is a fun show for our vendors and customers. Other historical paper memorabilia and ephemera are also for sale.

Work has started on installing an iconic artwork in the Olympic Park that was inspired by popular music including the songs of Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young.

RUN, created by internationally-renowned artist Monica Bonvicini, will be the largest standalone artwork on the Olympic Park and will be situated on the plaza of the 6,500-capacity Copper Box (the new name for the London 2012 Handball Arena). Images, released by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), can be viewed here

The artwork is set to become a significant point of interest both during the Games and for years afterwards, when the Olympic Park is opened up as Britains largest urban park for over a century. It forms part of the ODAs Art in the Park programme and is funded by the London Development Agency and the Greater London Authority.

It features three nine-metre-tall letters forming the word in capital letters, each weighing ten tonnes. The letters are constructed from steel and reflective glass producing a mirrored effect during the day and a playful glow at night through the innovative use of LED lighting that will reflect off a series of internal curved mirrors. It will take around six weeks to fit all the components to the letters, including the glass and 305m of energy-efficient LED lighting.

Bonvicinis choice of the word RUN is a reflection of cultural references such as popular music titles, including The Velvet Undergrounds Run Run Run, Neil Youngs Running Dry and Bruce Springsteens Born to Run.

Dennis Hone, ODA Chief Executive, said: ‘The RUN sculpture will not only become an attraction for the Olympic Park during the Games but also for years to come as a focal point for the many thousands of visitors that will come when the Park is transformed after the Games.

‘The ODAs Art in the Park programme has strived to commission original and meaningful works and Monica Bonvincinis unique installation will capture both the imagination and attention of spectators and visitors passing it.’

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ’2012 will be a summer like no other, with a myriad of fantastic events taking place right across London. This wonderful sculpture is just one example of inspiring new artwork that will form part of a lasting cultural legacy for the benefit of the capital, long after the Games have left town.’

Monica Bonvicini said: ‘It’s exciting to see the work finally start on site after being awarded the commission in Summer 2010. RUN will blend in perfectly in the landscape, avoiding monumentality through the mirroring of the surroundings. At night the psychedelic light reflections will illuminate it in a vigorous, elegant and witty way, reflecting the great liveliness of London.’

Ruth Mackenzie, Director, Cultural Olympiad & London 2012 Festival, said: ‘The ODA have done an amazing job of putting art at the heart of the Olympic Park. RUN will not only be a wonderful piece for visitors to enjoy during the Games, but also leave a lasting legacy for years after. Parents are appalled at the recent GQ Glee spread. I opened it, ready to be appalled, ready to chime in. I was appalled – that I liked it. I was appalled at how unappalled I was, as a mom.I know how I feel about promiscuous pirate princess costumes for my 5 year-old. They make me itch. Super uncomfy. I can’t find a place for that in my child’s life. Not yet. Not at 5. But, I do know that there is a place for it somewhere. One day (gasp) she will grow up, and sexy will be one side of her lovely lady life. But I wasn’t appalled by this.

One side to us as women is sexy. If we so choose, and when. I don’t like it being the ONLY option, but I love choices. And I too, at times, need to feel sexy. It is harder now as a mom, with spit-up on my shirt and a diaper bag on my shoulder, but my sexy side is still there. I was driving in my car a few weeks ago and I heard Lea Michele say she was considering doing a spread for Playboy. I was OK with this. I didn’t flinch and gasp and start yelling at the radio. She is an adult. She is a beautiful woman. But then I heard her say, if it would “further her career, why not?” That was enough to make me veer into a STOP sign. I started scolding the dashboard because, well, I didn’t have Lea’s cell number – Your talent, not your BODY, has lifted you off Broadway stages and carried you to where you are today – a Gleeky, uber-talented, media darling.

Fast forward a few weeks later to GQ magazine. A super sexed up spread of Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, and Cory Monteith. Everyone is gasping and appalled. I thought it was hot. I wasn’t appalled.

As a parent I’m scratching and wondering why this isn’t bothering me when all I’ reading are horror stories of Halloween and the GQ Glee spread. Why aren’t hot and bothered by this? Why didn’ this scare my like the “by”costumes in Target?

Lea Michele,isn’t 5 years-old. She’s an adult. She has a sexy side too. She should embrace that side of her beauty as well. If she did it to further her career, then that’s sad. She doesn’t eed that to further anything. But if she did it because as a woman it is fun to feel sexy sometimes -wonderful. I don’t think she should be type-ast into one side of her either! She is talented, and sometimes she is sexy.

If parents struggle with this, I think they need to start pointing fingers at Hollywood. Why is Hollywood and whoever hires who casting adults to play these young roles? How do these adults play teenagers and live their lives outside of that one gig as innocent,model-like teenagers?

Might I just add that my kids don’t watch Glee. My friends do. But my daughter wants a poster of Justin Beiber, shirtless and almost pants-less on her wall. And Bratz dolls – omplete with leather chaps and platform heels. They are ugly. But the Glee cast in GQ, as adults, in a magazine targeted at adults, was phenomenal.

The Downtown is one of New Jersey’s hottest night spots where rockers like Bruce Springsteen and Sebastian Bach like to hang out. During their time there the band performed live on Entre Nosotras, one of the largest television talk shows, made guest appearances on all major radio stations including AlfaRock, and performed for fans old and new at venues like the Hard Rock, Logans and La Feria, the largest fair in the Carribbean.
